Lasik Surgery
LASEK or E-LASIKThis procedure is a development of PRK whereby the surface epithelium instead of being scraped away is saved and lifted away in hinged flap form. After the laser reshaping is performed, the epithelium is replaced.
The advantages of this are much less discomfort if the epithelium is able to fully replaced, and quicker recovery of vision. The vision does not recover quite as quickly as LASIK, and there is always the possibility that the epithelium may come loose and slough away, and then the patient will have to wait a few days for regrowth as in PRK.
This is a good choice for patients with corneas that are too thin for LASIK, or other problems that prevent the making of a corneal flap.
