Monovision Eye Surgery
Although all people above the age of 40 will need reading glasses, when the eyes are corrected by refractive surgery, one of the eyes can be left slightly nearsighted. This procedure is called monovision. One eye, usually the dominant one, is fully corrected for distance, and the non-dominant eye is set up for reading. If a small amount of monovision is used, the patient will be able to read without reading glasses in almost all instances except with small print or in dim light.
The use of small amounts of monovision does not significantly decrease distance vision or depth perception, and in most patients does not cause a subjective imbalance. Larger amounts of monovision enable a patient to read just about everything without reading glasses, but in some patients cause a subjective imbalance, loss of depth perception, or necessitate nighttime driving glasses.
Dr. Motwani believes in the customization of the monovision to the patient's needs, rather than just a standard monovision correction, and the amount of monovision is determined during the pre-operative examination.
